About the Planetary Health Campus Ambassador program


The Planetary Health Campus Ambassador program is a competitively-awarded leadership opportunity for students committed to educating their campus community about Planetary Health, as well as an opportunity to receive mentorship from a preeminent leader in Planetary Health. The Campus Ambassador program represents our belief that global Planetary Health action begins at home, with ambassadors leading workshops, seminars, presentations, projects, and other events through their respective Planetary Health clubs and broader university leadership. During this semester-long program, students host creative and engaging community engagement opportunities and develop and build their leadership and organizational skills. AGAN LEONARD OWUOR

Agan Leonard is a postgraduate student, taking masters in environmental health at the University of Eldoret and also a graduate assistant at the Department of Environmental Biology and Health, University of Eldoret.
He became a campus ambassador in 2020, and got engaged in different student led activities at the University of Eldoret, and by extension to other universities covered within the Eastern Africa region. This he achieved since his appointment as communication and community outreach person for the Planetary Heath Eastern Africa Hub.
Leonard’s research interest includes environmental health, environmental toxicology, Biodiversity, climate change, and population health.
He is currently part of different research projects including child health and nutrition, exposure and health implications at the gold mining sites and invivo toxicity of toxic elements.

Alexander Levitskiy

Alex is a second-year veterinary student at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, and he holds a B.S. in Animal Science and Biological Sciences from Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Via international field experiences, Alex has partaken in community-centered conservation efforts and learned important strategies in developing sustainable models that give dwindling species a shot at survival. His research involvements to date include investigating avian malaria incidence in gyrfalcons in the Arctic in light of climate change; infectious disease ecology of Mycoplasma gallisepticum in house finches; and exploring the links between anthropogenic activities, harmful algal blooms, cyanotoxins in fish, and the subsequent health effects on fishing communities that rely on Lake Victoria's fisheries. After obtaining his D.V.M., Alex plans to pursue graduate training in global health to be equipped to address health concerns at human/wildlife interfaces.

Angela Zhong

Angela Zhong is a first-generation Asian-American Harvard student hailing from Houston, Texas. She is studying economics with a secondary in environmental science public policy and a citation in Mandarin. On campus, Angela is a United Nations Association National Campus Fellow and conducted research with UN SDG Advocate Dr. Alaa Murabit through the Harvard Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Studies as well as with the Kennedy School of Public Policy’s Belfer Center for International Affairs. She also serves as a team lead for: the Harvard College Consulting Group’s plant-based meat substitute case, the Council of Student Sustainability Leaders, Presidential Committee on Sustainability Scope 3 Emissions Group, and the student-faculty Dining Services Council.

Blessing Oyeleye is a Veterinary Medical student at the University of Abuja, Nigeria. He has a genuine interest in Public Health. His overall goal is to contribute to improving the quality of life of animals and humans by advancing the frontiers of Public Health and Food Security. He consistently makes himself available for voluntary community services and personal development programs. For instance, he served as an OIE (World Organization for Animal Health) Junior Ambassador for his University (2019), where he learned about contemporary animal health issues that impact on global food security, and relayed this knowledge to his local university’s community. He also led the events of public awareness on Anti-Microbial Resistance and Rabies in his university community. He is the current President of the International Veterinary Students' Association, University of Abuja Member Organization.

Chimwemwe is a Microbiologist and Currently pursuing her Masters of Science in Public Health at the University of Zambia.
She was born on the 20th of January 1993 in Lusaka, from a Family of two Children. She is the younger child, and has an elder brother. She
 grew up in difficult and challenging environments where most girls never completed school. It was either they fell pregnant or they could not continue do to financial challenges. Despite this, she is currently pursuing her Masters in Public Health from the University of Zambia Ridgeway Campus on a distance basis as she works as a Research Assistant at the National Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research.

He has been involved and led various One Health/ Planetary Health activities standing in various positions from being a general member of the local one health university club to Asia continent representative of the international group of students working for One Health ISOHA and Standing as a Campus Ambassador of global network of Planetary Health Advocate Planetary Health Alliance's PHCA program of 2021. Apart form raising concerns and awareness regarding global issues of One Health/ Planetary Health, he also performs his duty of Vet. Surgeon at a Small Animal Hospital based in Nepal helping animal uplifting and advocating their health and welfare and promoting public health as well keeping healthy animals and people together. Being a One Health/ Planetary Health enthusiast he is learning and exploring the concept of Planetary Health and is interested to contribute and learn. He was fascinated to know how this concept of Planetary Health will help him in his small effort to make a better world. He is learning, exploring, and educating others with the concepts of One Health, Planetary Health, EcoHealth, Global Health and connecting them with SDGs for a better world and secured future.

Luca Martinalli is a fourth-year medical student at the University of Pavia, where he is a member of Ghislieri college. According to his strong interest in scientific research and global health topics, he is attending a biomedical research laboratory in Pavia as a research volunteer and he is trying to expand his knowledge of public, global and Planetary Health. In this last field, his current main interest include the analysis of the relationship between climate change and health systems resilience and the impact of medicine on urban planning and public space. Dr. Asad currently holds the position of Research Fellow at the Centre for Global Health, University of Oslo, Norway. His research interests focus on the key pathways and interactions involved in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) along with environmental and Infectious disease epidemiology (especially zoonotic) through a Planetary Health approach. In addition, he has a keen interest in capacity building for Global Health in South Asia and Sub Saharan Africa. In regards to his academic background, he is a medical doctor from Bangladesh, and possesses an MPhil in Public Health under NOMA fellowship grant from UiO and MPH in Biosecurity under One Health Fellowship from Massey University, New Zealand. He is also a former GHES Fogarty fellow at University of California Berkeley and visiting scholar at Vanderbilt University, USA. He likes traveling and blog writing beyond his academic career.

Thomas is currently a graduate student at the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research focuses on the nexus of land-use change and health, specifically looking at deforestation and associated infectious disease emergence risk. Thomas also holds an MPH in International Development from the University of Sheffield, and worked thereafter in clinical oncology research before going back for his PhD following the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the pandemic to investigate disease emergence issues further, Thomas is hoping to apply his previous research skills to ecology and disease in the Anthropocene - and help move Planetary Health forward as a field. Outside of academics, Thomas has been a lifelong environmentalist and is an avid hiker, cyclist, guitar player, chef, and sunset enthusiast!
